2010 Anchorage Viognier, Nelson NZ.
Naked Wines £12. B+

On the nose plenty of citrus, lemon, some grapefruit and unripe peaches too; white floral, lifted, expressive nose. Palate is quite fat and wide; feels rather thick. Acidity muted. Glycerol / oily touches even? Needs food, basically bone dry. Refrigerated, this still drinks well on day two.

1996 Abadia Retuerta 'Cuvee El Campanario', Sardon de Duero
£20 (at auction). B+

On opening: dark berries, cassis, earthy; mulled wine warmth, with lots of sweet spices and cinnamon, star anise. After a while, it develops to a cedar, sweet cherry wood nose; very attractive. Palate now settled, lush red fruits, sour cherries; still rather vibrant acidity, so together, integrated. Has aged well.
